Our History

The National Radiation Emergency Medical Center (NREMC) in Korea Institute of Radiological &
Medical Sciences (KIRAMS) was constituted to prepare a countermeasure of medical preparedness and
response involved in nuclear/radiological disaster in 2003 by a law, "Act on Physical Protection and
Radiological Emergency."

  • 2016
    • December Hosted the 2nd WHO Asian REMPAN workshop on emergency preparedness and response to radiation emergencies
      Conducted exercise on operating 2300 hot-line assuming influx of incoming calls
      Renewed of Medical Laboratory Accreditation based on ISO/IEC-15189(Dec. 2016 ~ Dec. 2018)
      October Hosted KIRAMS-NIRP joint seminar / NIRP visited primary radiation emergency medical hospital (Dongguk Univ. Gyeongju Hospital) September Designated Gochang General Hospital as a primary radiation emergency medical
      Acquired Laboratory Accreditation based on ISO/IEC-17025
      Participated in 2016 annual meeting of ARADOS (CIRP, China)
      August Participated in 2016 Ulchi Freedom Guardian Drill
      Hosted regional workshop on medical preparedness and response to radiation emergencies with IAEA
      June Cytogenetic biodosimetry passed NHTA (New Health Technology Assessment) by Ministry of Health and Welfare May Participated in 2016 Safe Korea Anti-Disaster Exercise
      Hosted advanced training course on assessment of occupational exposure due to intakes of radionuclides with IAEA
      February Dispatched radiation emergency medical response personnel to Japan NASHIM training
      Conducted winter seasonal exercise on radiation emergency medical response
      Reorganized NREMC's structure – formation of Radiation Exposure and Therapeutics Lab
      January Held relay seminars with 4 international experts in radiation biology

Our History

The National Radiation Emergency Medical Center (NREMC) leads the way in preparing radaition emergency medical response system and in providing advanced radiation emergency medicine to the people of Korean.

The mission entails investing in four key areas:

  • Maintaining radiation emergency medical countermeasures & reinforcing medical response capabilities to support designated hospitals.
  • Implementing radiation emergency medical services for radiation exposed patients such as acute care, hospitalization, and long-term follow up, etc....
  • Managing education and training program for medical personnel and first responders.
  • Implementing technical and scientific research to provide advanced patient care involved in radiation incidents.
